Cable Snag

An FA-18F Super Hornet from the US Navy's Strike Fighter Squadron 2 (VFA-2) "Bounty Hunters" is stopped by an arresting cable after landing on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). This photo was taken during an embark tour for the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2024 military exercise. A group of media spent the day at sea, about 100 miles south of Waikīkī, touring the aircraft carrier and its operations. It was an amazing experience to witness catapult launches and arrester hook recoveries up close, along with riding on an MV-22B Osprey to and from land. The 2026 iteration of RIMPAC is currently in progress.

A Fern In A Gutter

An elkhorn fern grows in a rain gutter at the McKinley Tiger Softball Stadium. It was right behind my camera scaffold was set up. During this past season, the plant was removed.

Birthday Girl

Our Yuki celebrated her 11th birthday yesterday, along with Independence Day. This photo was taken on her 1st birthday.

Calm Tidepool

On the east end of Nimitz Beach, is a large tidepool that keeps beachgoers, especially children, safe from the waves, even at high tide. When it's low tide, it's extremely calm.

Planespotters

With the new, taller fences in the General Aviation parking lot at the Daniel K Inouye International Airport, planespotters need to get creative to take photos of Runway 8R departures above the fenceline.

Bamboo And Stone Fountain

This horse, part of a farm in Makakilo, grazes in the grass among the kiawe trees.

Orange Streamers

Orange streamers lay on Aloha Stadium's turf following the end of the 2016 NFL Pro Bowl's post game presentation, as Team Irvin won the game. It would be the final NFL Pro Bowl game played at Aloha Stadium.

It does not seem like it's been a decade since the last Pro Bowl was played at Aloha Stadium. Now the 51-year-old structure is undergoing demolition for the new Aloha Stadium.

Dual Spray

As part of their morning tests, one of the Aerial Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Station 2 crews drives a vehicle up and down Taxiway R. On the way back to the station, it sprayed water from both the nose turret, and the snorkel arm turret, causing a faint rainbow.

Lei Greeting

As part of their inaugural flight from Honolulu to Incheon (Seoul), Hawaiian Airlines staff gave lei to boarding passengers as they walked toward the jet bridge. Inhee, a Hawaiian Airlines customer service agent posed for this photo as part of the media event.

Rainbow Tunnel

Within the town of Mililani, there are pedestrian tunnels that run under Kamehameha Highway and major streets. One of these tunnels was painted like a rainbow from end to end. Though over the years, others have taken artistic license to add to the artwork.

Outdoor Viewing

I came across these three toilets and flat screen TV lined up like this in a front yard. Apparently, they were set out for bulk trash pickup.

Mallards

This trio of Mallard Ducks were part of the flock of ducks, that walked down the street, to make their way to the Paiko Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary.

Wide Receiver Training

Hawai‘i-born, former Toronto Argonauts wide receiver / kick returner Chad Owens, teaches youth and high school football players speed, agility, and wide receiver skills. With the growing popularity of girls flag football, girls have been students in the classes. Some of his classes were held in the park across the street from our house.

With his career with the Argonauts, Chad Owens set a Canadian Football League record for three consecutive seasons of 3,000 all-purpose yards, named the 2012 Most Outstanding Player, and 2012 Grey Cup Champion. After his retirement, he was inducted into the Argonauts Hall of Honour, and the CFL Hall of Fame. Last year, Owens was also inducted into the University of Hawai‘i's Circle of Honor.

A wave crashes against the breakers shielding Lagoon 2 at Ko Olina, as part of the wave enters the lagoon. These natural wave breakers shield the four lagoons at the Ko Olina Resort.

Night Foraging

This feral pig made its way through the trees surrounding the Maunalani Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at night, foraging through the bushes on the property. While waiting for the mortuary to pick up my late father's body, I heard rustling in the bushes below the lanai where I was sitting. This was one of three pigs walking in the area. I told the two of the registered nurses on duty, and they  and others came out to look.

‘Īlio holo i ka uaua

The Hawaiian Monk Seal, or ‘Īlio holo i ka uaua, is one of the most endangered species on the planet. The "dog that runs through rough water" is endemic to the Hawaiian Island chain, even the Northern Hawaiian Islands. This particular monk seal was resting on Nimitz Beach last year. I had gone to Nimitz Beach to catch an arriving airliner at the Kalaeloa Airport, and spotted the seal in the distance. After getting the airplane photos, I walked down to the area where the seal was. Keeping my distance, I was able to get some great shots.

Federal and state laws state that there must be a 150-foot distance from Hawaiian Monk Seals on any Hawai‘i beach. Also, seal sightings can be reported to NOAA.
