Sandbar Beach Day

In Ke‘ehi Lagoon, there are a few sand bars big enough to land a small boat and walk on it during low tide. As was the case with this family one morning. The rocky shoreline in the background is the "Reef Runway" of the Daniel K Inouye International Airport.

School Is In Session

Calm Tidepool

On the east end of Nimitz Beach, is a large tidepool that keeps beachgoers, especially children, safe from the waves, even at high tide. When it's low tide, it's extremely calm.

Breaking Waves

A wave crashes against the breakers shielding Lagoon 2 at Ko Olina, as part of the wave enters the lagoon. These natural wave breakers shield the four lagoons at the Ko Olina Resort.

‘Īlio holo i ka uaua

The Hawaiian Monk Seal, or ‘Īlio holo i ka uaua, is one of the most endangered species on the planet. The "dog that runs through rough water" is endemic to the Hawaiian Island chain, even the Northern Hawaiian Islands. This particular monk seal was resting on Nimitz Beach last year. I had gone to Nimitz Beach to catch an arriving airliner at the Kalaeloa Airport, and spotted the seal in the distance. After getting the airplane photos, I walked down to the area where the seal was. Keeping my distance, I was able to get some great shots.

Federal and state laws state that there must be a 150-foot distance from Hawaiian Monk Seals on any Hawai‘i beach. Also, seal sightings can be reported to NOAA.

Baptism

It's been almost a year since my Dad graduated to Heaven. One of the proudest moments I have as his son, was when he decided to get baptized about a year after receiving Jesus. Dad is pictured with Pastor Elwin Ahu of Metro Christian Church after his baptism at Ala Moana Beach in 2013.

Keawaula Blowhole

At Keaweula Beach Park, also known as Yokohama Bay, there is a blowhole within the rocks along the shoreline. While not as well known as the Halona Blowhole on O‘ahu's east shoreline, this one does have some impressive spouts when the waves are right.

Makua Beach

Located along the Waianae coastline, is Makua Beach. This is the southern portion of the beach park.

At The Tide Pool

Beyond the hedges at the Ko Olina Resort, are rocky shorelines. In some spots, there are some good sized tide pools. I came across this family, that found one of the larger tide pools, with their kids sitting in it.

Maʻili Beach Waves

Waimānalo Beach

Located on the east side of Oʻahu, Waimānalo Beach is a favorite for local families. It's known for its fine white sand, the view of Manana Island, with the Ko‘olau Mountains behind it.

Painted Rocks

These painted rocks were part of a series of hand-painted rocks put on tree branches near Makua Beach.

View From The Ocean

Experimenting with my GoPro, I took it into the ocean in a waterproof housing to shoot photos and videos. This was one of the shots pointing back at the beach.

Crashing Wave

A wave crashes into the rocky shoreline on the south end of Keawa‘ula Beach, also known as Yokohama Bay.

Kolea In-Flight

A kolea, or golden plover, caught in mid-flight as it traverses the beach for food.

Deadly Catch

During a day at the beach, we found a dead crab was on the shore, I moved it to the slipper for the photo.
