Summer Surf Season

The summer surf season is upon us on O‘ahu, as the swells move around to the southern shorelines. Todayʻs photo shows a surf swell that rolled in during last summer.

HFD1 Door

Honolulu Fire Departmentʻs Station 1 has three of these decorative metal doors that houses the fire trucks assigned to the downtown station. Earlier, I posted a close-up photo of the tribal Hawaiian artwork of the doors.

Stitch

The alien "Stitch" from the Disney movie "Lilo & Stitch" is immortalized is this wood sculpture on the grounds of the Disney Aulani Resort.

Overhead Pass

Two F-22A Raptors from the Hawai‘i Air National Guard make an overhead pass prior to landing.

Major Milestone

This past April, the Boeing Airplane Company celebrated its delivery of the 4,000th 737NextGeneration that they built. Combining all of the 737 variants, itʻs 7,132nd thatʻs been built and delivered. China Southern Airlines was the airline to receive the 4,000th 737NG, and commemorated the milestone with the decal seen below the forward entry door of B-5283, a 737-700.

Aloha! Welcome To Hawai‘i!

The flight and cabin crews of this China Southern Airlines 737-700 get the standard Hawaiian lei greeting as they deplane after their flight from Boeing Field, Seattle, WA. The crews wound up taking photos of each other in front of their plane with their lei around their necks.

Fallen Officer

This week is National Police Week, where law enforcement agencies around the country recognize agents, officers, troopers and deputies killed in the line of duty.

Todayʻs photo shows a roadside memorial for Honolulu Police Department Officer Garrett C. Davis, who was killed while trying to assist a stranded motorist on the evening of January 21, 2012. Officer Davis was the 44th HPD officer killed in the line of duty, when his cruiser was struck from behind on the Interstate H1 East in ‘Aiea, and the vehicle exploded upon impact before he could assist the stranded motorist. This memorial sits on the opposite hillside abeam of the accident site.

‘Alae ‘Ula

An ‘alae ‘ula, or Hawaiian gallinue (common moorhen) swims in the Hāmākua Marsh in Kailua.

Hau‘ula Beach Park

On the northeast shore of O‘ahu, is the town of Hau‘ula. I took this panorama before shooting my pastor's son's wedding on this beach.

Ala Moana Beach

The theme week for May is the "AutoStitch" iPhone app, which is a panorama-assist photo app.

Today's photo shows Ala Moana Beach and the metro Honolulu skyline, from Magic Island Park, complete with the Lantern Floating Hawai‘i stage.

Yellow Tree

This tree is taken over by yellow flowers. It's quite common around O‘ahu, and when in bloom, can be seen quite well in the distance.

Silver Skin

For their entire history, American Airlines has always had a bare aluminum color scheme. The the almost-mirrorlike surface is polished to avoid corrosion. Today's photo shows the skin above the cockpit windshield, and the rivets that fasten the skin to the airframe.

Military Appreciation Month

May is Military Appreciation Month. 

I, for one, appreciate the service and sacrifice the men and women of the US Armed Forces do for our country.

Today's photo shows a US Air Force color guard unit at the F-22A Raptor blessing at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
