Wishing you all a Happy Halloween!

Caution: Jet Spray

Following a heavy rain showers, a UPS McDonnell-Douglas MD-11F kicks up rain water on Taxiway RT, as it turns onto Taxiway RA.  The MD-11F's two wing-mounted engines created the spray as the pilots throttled up to make the turn.  I did manage to duck away to avoid some of the spray.

Maile Lei For Raptors

As part of the welcoming ceremony and blessing for the F-22A Raptor to the Hawai‘i Air National Guard's 199th Fighter Squadron, maile lei were hung over the nose of the first two aircraft.  The 199th will also partner with the 19th FS as an active-duty associate unit to the 199th.

19th FS Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Harvey Newton and wife Becky (right) place a maile lei over the nose of 03-4046, which is the first 19th FS "Gamecocks" F-22A.  Crew Chief Staff Sargent Jeff Herman (left) assists the Newtons.

Kapu means "forbidden" in Hawaiian.  This sign is on the grounds of the Aloha Ke ‘Akua wedding chapel, and is flanked by the Kahalu‘u Fish Pond, which is part of the Wong Estate.

Along coastal areas, ancient native Hawaiians made fish ponds with rocks to naturally enclose areas for their food supply.  A limited number of these ponds exist along rural areas of each island.

Post Game Prayer

Following their 49-36 loss to the USC Trojans, the UH Warriors huddle for a post-game prayer led by head coach Greg McMackin and team leaders.

The Warriors entered the game as 21-point underdogs, and it's my guess that there were some that lost money on the game.  The game was actually closer than the score reflects.  It was amazing to see how many yards (400+) the Trojan defense gave up.

This was the view from my camera perch high above the north end zone through the field goal net.

Not quite the sports bar chain bearing that name.  This is the compound where ESPN has their broadcast trailers set up.  That big generator on the left provided power to the two trailers, plus a satellite uplink truck behind the trailer on the left. The trailer in the center and the right is where the director, replays, and all of the technical stuff takes place.

With about nine cameras for the game, ESPN laid out a few miles in cables from the truck to the camera positions.

Trojans Fans

This group was part of the several thousand USC fans that made the trip to Honolulu to watch their school battle UH.  They were walking to a special USC alumni party held across Aloha Stadium, at Richardson Field, on the grounds of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.  I took this shot as I made my way to our control room.

Each time that UH and USC play at Aloha Stadium, it always draws a huge number of Trojan fans.  The only other schools that I've seen draw a lot fans are University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the University of Washington Huskies.

The theme week for October is the "UH Season Opener", the University of Hawai‘i Warriors first game of the 2010 season they played against the University of Southern California Trojans on September 1st.

Today's photo shows Warriors fans setting up their tents, grills, and supplies for their pre-game tailgate parties.  I took this shot as I walked from my car to the video control room.
