Viewfinder Perspective
One of the great things about the HDV camcorders is that it has a flip-out three-inch LCD monitor. It supplements the viewfinder in the back of the camera. Today's photo shows one of the videographer's LCD monitors, and the extreme close-up shot of Akira Hokuto.

Photo Op
This family poses with Nippon Television entertainment reporter Kozo Inoue, who happens to be quite popular in Japan. They just exited International Arrivals to see the reporters looking out for celebrities.

The Waiting Game
As mentioned in yesterday's post, sometimes this assignment is a waiting game, and a test of patience. This camera op stands by, but no one is sure if any celebrities are on any of the flights from Japan. A majority of us would sit in stand-down mode, and wait until we got word that a celebrity was on a particular flight. The antsy ones wait like this videographer above.

Camera Crews
Today's photo has the camera crews, waiting for something to shoot. On some days it can be a waiting game, while others can have back-to-back interviews. Thanks to technology, the cameras have shrunk down to broadcast-grade HDV HandyCams, from 20-pound Sony Betacams; and the audio person has been phased out.

The Reporters
The theme week for March is the New Year's Japanese TV paparazzi at HNL. Each New Year's season, Japanese TV networks have reporters and camera crews positioned outside the International Arrivals exit at the Honolulu International Airport. Over the past two-plus decades, I had been one of the camera operators with Nippon Television, and TV Asahi, but in the past couple years, I've been off the assignment. Basically, the assignment is to get interviews with Japanese celebrities as they exit. Out of curiosity, I ventured down to HNL one day before the end of 2011, to hang out with some of the camera crews I've known since I began doing this shoot.
Leading off theme week, is a photo of the reporters who wait and watch to spot any Japanese celebrity to get a brief interview with.

Hawaiian Airlines Field
This past August, Hawaiian Airlines announced that they will be the new corporate sponsor of the UBU Sports S5-M artificial turf that was installed in Aloha Stadium. Now called Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium, the airline has signage in and around the stadium noting the sponsorship. In today's photo Hawaiian Airlines president and CEO Mark Dunkerley poses on the signage painted onto the turf.

Queen Of The Skies
When Japan Airlines retired the Boeing 747-446s from their fleet last February, the final international flight was from HNL to Narita International Airport. To commemorate the occasion, a celebration was held at HNL's Gate 27, for those passengers and crew who made the flight. The young man, that posed between one of the flight attendants and pilots, made the banner. The JAL Honolulu Station selected one of my 747 photos used on the archway banner.
