Beijing Olympics

Today is the openning ceremony for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. In honor of that ... here's my contribution ... Air China is one the Games' sponsors, and had several of their aircraft painted with the Beijing 2008 artwork. This one, B-5176, features Fuwa - The Five Friendlies, mascots of the Beijing Games.

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games website has a complete list of all of the mascots (Fuwa - The Five Friendlies) artwork like those on B-5176.

Today's photo is also a hint to what this month's theme will be ...

Nuts And Bolts

These giaint nuts and bolts belong to a temporary sewer line that ran from Waikiki into on of Honolulu's sewer mains after the one in Waikiki broke a couple of years ago. These nuts and bolts held pipe connections together for this temporary pipe was laid above ground.

Putting On The Brakes

This Aloha Airlines Boeing 737-700W is putting on the brakes to slow down after arriving from Santa Ana, back in 2004. You can see the flaps and spoilers in the rear part of the wing deployed, as well as the leading edge slats to slow the aircraft down. You can also see part of HIckam AFB in the background.

This was the second landing after the first was a missed approach.

That round-trip to/from SNA on Aloha was probably one of the best in-flight services I ever had. It's sad to see the demise of the airline, and all those who were affected by it.

Christmas In July

Well, it's five months before Christmas ... I had this one ready to go this past winter, but felt it might work better in July. Kathy & I had gone to Honolulu Hale to check out the Christmas lights display.

Hope you all started your Christmas shopping ... only 153 days left! :-D

Bottled Water

At one of my part-time workplaces, we ran out of bottled water, so one of the guys had a funny notion to put those Dasani water bottles in the hole where the real five gallon jug is supposed to go. I found it quite funny myself ... and had my L3 to get a shot of it. If you're wondering ... he didn't open those small bottles.

Mokoli‘i Island, or Chinaman's Hat, sits off of Kualoa Regional Park on O‘ahu's windward coast. It's a popular attraction in which people can walk out to the island at extremely low tides. Keki‘inani got shots from Chinaman's Hat on her photo blog.

High Endzone

This is the perspective from Aloha Stadium's Jumbotron Camera 2, above the north end zone, on the concourse of the red and yellow seating sections. It's also behind the stadium's Jumbotron. I took this photo during player warm-ups of a high school playoff game, hence the small crowd.

This can be one of the coldest spots in Aloha Stadium, as there is no shelter from the chilly north winds of our Hawaiian winters. For most residents of Hawai‘i, anything below 70°F is considered freezing. I have experienced the temperature dropping in a matter of an hour as the sun went down, and the winds kicked up.

In fact, during a UH game, a videographer from ESPN was on the platform near mine, wondered why I had my jacket wrapped around the legs of my tripod. I told him that during the second half, the temperature will drop around 10°F. He said he was in Oklahoma the week before, and that was cold ... in the 50s. Right after the halftime show, I put on my jacket, to prepare for the cold. During a TV timeout, I saw him grab his jacket out his backpack, and quickly put it on. I looked over, and he looked back and smiled, then said, "You were right, it's pretty chilly up here".

Camera 2 also has the challenge of fans, especially the ones who have had a few beers, wanting to be on TV. Those eager to be on "TV", tug the hem of my shorts to get my attention. To which my response is that they won't see themselves because we are behind the Jumbotron; and their response is usually delayed since the alcohol clouds the perception. I watched one guy's "light bulb" go from dim to bright as he stood and thought. There's usually a security guard or HPD officer around, but not always.

Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's helmet sits on a table on the NFC team sidelines, while he awaits his turn to get in the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl. The lime green dot along the centerline is to signify that the helmet contains communications equipment so that the plays can be relayed to the quarterback from the bench by radio.

Back in the day ... the Seahawks used to be my favorite NFL team, in the Jim Zorn / Steve Largent days. So I thought I could not pass up the opprtunity to get a shot of this helmet. Though I really don't follow the NFL (much less the Seahawks), I do enjoy working the Pro Bowl.

PreGame

The non-starters for the University of Hawai‘i Warriors enter the field through an inflatble UH helmet, amidst the fog machines. Normally, for their home games, the Warriors wear their dark green helmets, but for this game against San Diego State University, a couple of years ago, they opted for the road silver helmets (which they will not wear on the road this season, only the green ones).

Touchdown!

NFL Rookie Of The Year and Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson (#28) scores a fourth quarter touchdown to seal the NFC's victory in the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl.

I did the field videocamera work for the pre-game festivities, the first half, and the half-time show, then handed off the camera to one of our other skilled Jumbotron shooters, and pulled cable for the second half.

‘Aina

The theme week for July is "Football". With the 2008 season right around the corner, the NFL, colleges and high schools are gearing up with training camps about to begin, while the Canadian Football League season is underway, and the Arena Football League is in playoff mode.

Today's photo is from the 2008 Hula Bowl ... with the team "‘Aina" (Hawaiian for land) offense running its pass routes during pre-game warm ups. Two former University of Hawai‘i Warriors, defensive back Myron Newberry (#38) and receiver (#80) C.J. Hawthorne are seen above.

Naupaka

The naupaka plant is commonly found around the coastline of Hawai‘i, as well as other parts of the Pacific region. One feature is the half-flowers. There are two types of naupaka in Hawai‘i, the naupaka kai (grows near the ocean) and naupaka kahakai (grows in mountainous areas)

There is an ancient Hawaiian legend that the because of the half-flowers, the naupaka kai and the naupaka kahakai were two lovers that were separated, and that when brought together, they form one whole flower.

Ready For Some Football, Eh?

The 2008 Canadian Football League regular season gets underway this week. My favorite team, the BC (British Columbia) Lions, begins their '08 campaign for the Grey Cup on the road against Western Division rival Calgary Stampeders tonight. Yes, that's my mini-helmet and my t-shirt.

How did I get to like the CFL? Back in '82, the NFL had a labor dispute, and ESPN had the brains to put CFL games to stem the loss of football on TV. Since that time, I got hooked. In fact, I enjoy the CFL more than the NFL, due to the speed of the Canadian product, and watch it whenever I can. And yes, I have been to a CFL game, a Lions one in fact, and enjoyed it all the more.

Go Lions!

One of the coolest video gadgets around is the Fly Cam. Riding on a series of wires, the camera can zip along a path at speeds up to 100mph, and can swivel 360° horizontally, and 180° vertically.

The next time you're watching a sporting event, concert, or special event with moving high perspective, it might be a Fly Cam.

We saw these Dachsund puppies at a local pet store, and being both suckers for a doxie, we had to go look, and carry one of the four pups they had for sale. They were so cute. In fact, we had to go back to get a photo of us with one of the four.

No, we did not buy any of the puppies.

Paper Shredder

World-renowned aerobatic pilot Patty Wagstaff shreds some paper streamers with the prop blades of the Extra 300 she's flying. Wagstaff performed at the 2007 Blues On The Bay air show as the headlining aerobatic pilot, ahead of the US Navy's Blue Angels.

Wagstaff actually had to use Tim Weber's Extra 300, because she had a technical issue with her Extra 300.
