The Waimea River ends at Waimea Bay, and the two are usually separated by a sand berm. When the rains are heavy, the berm is broken to allow the runoff to flow into Waimea Bay. It also attracts body boarders ride the out-going river's muddy tide. The waves caused by the river is similar to an artificial wave machine.
